Whose dream? | Print |  E-mail

image001.jpg

Long time ago, when I was a teenager, I was on my way to school one morning. Halfway through, I picked up my friend, so that we could walk together and chat. Her flat was on the 9th floor. On our way down in the elevator she suddenly remembered something.

- Oh, I dreamed about you last night – she said – You were in an elevator…

She stopped talking, surprised by the expression on my face.

- What? – she inquired
- I also dreamed last night that I was in an elevator – I said.

We looked at each other surprised for a while, then I suggested, that we took turns in revealing further details about the dream, she would say one thing and I would say another. It was my turn and I asked:

- In your dream, when I was in that elevator, was there a cat there?

I watched as her eyes got very big and very round and she stared at me with amazement for several seconds. In the end she noded.

- What color was the cat?
- Black

The cat was black in both dreams.

We were outside now, walking slowly and stopping every few steps to stare at each other with growing astonishment.

I said that the cat did something in my dream.

Then she said that it jumped on my shoulder. I couldn´t believe it. That was exactly what happened in my dream. The cat in my dream scared me a bit, because it all of the sudden jumped on my shoulder.

- Was there anybody else in the elevator?
- Yes. A man.

That was right too.

- Was the man young or old?
- Young.

Right again.

- Which way was the elevator going?
- Up.

That was true too.
The final revelation was that both our dreams ended in the same moment. The elevator was going higher and higher up, but before it went through the roof, the dream just ended for both of us.

We dreamed an identical dream – down to the last detail.

I was in an elevator going up. There was a young man and a black cat there too. The cat suddenly jumped on my shoulder. The elevator was going higher and higher up, but before it came all the way to the top, the dream ended.

Whose dream was it? Did I send her my dream or was it the other way around? Did any of us own the dream in the first place? What really happened there?

Are all our minds linked together in some kind of gigantic internet, with dreams and ideas flying in all directions and without us having any control over it?

My life seems to show me, that that may indeed be the case. I would have several more experiences of similar kind later and not all of them were funny.

One in particular caused me grievance for several years. When I was in my twenties I tried to make manifest a childhood fantasy of mine, which had been in my head since childhood. But shortly after I started, something stopped me. It was like an invisible wall, which I couldn´t force. I was unable to continue the project and accepted, that it wouldn´t be done. But it would be done not much later – just not by me. A few years later, a person in another country would become rich and famous by manifesting my childhood fantasy. And just like with that dream – there seem to be just too many similarities for that to be a coincidence.

How did a complex idea with many details travel from one mind to another? I don´t know but it felt as if something had been stolen from me, even though I knew, that nobody had stolen anything. And I resented that person for several years.

I have accepted it now but for a long time it felt unfair.
And it makes me wonder about plagiarism cases. How many of the accused are in fact innocent?

Are experiences of this kind an evidence of collective mind?

And by the way – does anyone out there have similar thoughts?
